Barga is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and can be reached on foot from La Cantina del Vino in just a few minutes. The heart of the village is the Romanesque Cathedral of San Cristoforo, which towers above with a spectacular view of the Apuan Alps and the Apennines. Don't miss the medieval alleys of the historic centre, lined with local shops and restaurants. A few kilometres away, in the hamlet of Castelvecchio Pascoli, you'll find the Casa Museo di Giovanni Pascoli, the home of the poet who chose this land as his own. In summer Barga comes alive with markets, concerts and the Bargascot Festival, which every September draws visitors from across Europe, and especially from Scotland.

The Garfagnana is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt valleys in Tuscany, nestled between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, just 10 minutes from Barga, is the main town of the valley: the Rocca Ariostesca fortress is a must-see, named after the poet Ludovico Ariosto who governed the area from 1522 to 1525. Isola Santa is one of the most evocative spots in the Garfagnana: an ancient stone village overlooking a turquoise artificial lake, surrounded by forests and Apuan peaks. Lago di Gramolazzo has an almost Alpine feel, its dark waters framed by pine forests. Lago di Vagli holds one of the most fascinating mysteries in the area: beneath its waters lies the village of Fabbriche di Careggine, submerged in 1947 to build the dam and visible only when the lake is drained for maintenance, a rare event that draws tens of thousands of visitors each time.

The Fortezza delle Verrucole is located in San Romano in Garfagnana, about 25 minutes from Barga. It is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Tuscany, perched on a rocky outcrop with stunning views over the valley. Inside, it hosts an Archeopark where costumed guides bring 13th-century life back to vivid reality, a memorable experience for families and history lovers alike. Nearby you'll also find the Parco dell'Orecchiella, a nature reserve with trails for all levels, wildlife spotting (deer, mouflon, golden eagles), a botanical garden and a natural history museum.

The Grotta del Vento (Cave of the Wind), about 30 minutes from Barga towards Gallicano, is one of the most spectacular show caves in Europe. Located in the heart of the Apuan Alps Park, it offers three guided tours of different lengths (1, 2 or 3 hours) suitable for all ages, featuring stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes and streams. Along the road you'll pass the Eremo di Calomini, a small white sanctuary built into sheer overhanging rock, one of the most photographed sights in the Garfagnana. Note for motorhome travellers: the road to the Grotta del Vento beyond Gallicano is narrow and not recommended for large vehicles.

Absolutely. Lucca is about 40 km from Barga, less than an hour by car. The city is famous for its perfectly preserved Renaissance walls, which can be walked or cycled all the way round, and for its medieval historic centre with towers, Romanesque churches and lively piazzas. Every October, Lucca hosts Lucca Comics & Games, one of the most important international comics and gaming festivals in Europe, which transforms the city into a spectacular stage attended by hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world.

Yes, the Cinque Terre are about 1 hour 30 minutes from Barga. The five clifftop villages, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, are among the most photographed places in Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We recommend setting off early in the morning to avoid the summer crowds. Alternatively, Viareggio and the Versilia Riviera are reachable in about an hour, a quieter option for a day at the beach.
